It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and the fun doesn’t stop when it comes to building surveying. Munday + Cramer’s team of expert building surveyors are regulated by RICS (The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) and work with a diverse range of property portfolio holders. Each property has its own unique set of requirements during acquisition maintenance and selling, that needs to be carefully considered. Temperatures are starting to drop below freezing, we’re clearing frost off our windscreens and many areas are getting pretty snowy. Winter might not technically start for another couple of weeks at the time of writing, but it sure feels like it has! With many buildings shutting down over the holidays, it is important to prepare winter maintenance so you don’t have any nasty surprises when you head back. January is often gloomy enough already! Buying a house is likely to be the biggest investment you make, so much like all other financial decisions, you need to mitigate the risks as much as possible. Although you can’t predict what the market will do, you can ensure the property you’re purchasing has no hidden surprises, with a Homebuyer Survey. However, many people don’t fully understand what a Homebuyer survey is and why it’s essential for any house purchase. What is a Homebuyer Survey? Designing buildings with mental health in mind is important, no matter what kind of industry the building is for. According to mental health charity, Mind, a quarter of all adults experience a mental health problem every year in the UK. A sixth of UK adults will experience a common mental health problem, such as anxiety or depression, in any given week. These statistics show that mental disorders are one of the biggest health problems in the UK and unfortunately the statistics aren’t getting any better. Anything we can do to help improve people’s mental health is one of the key […]
With International Children’s Day just around the corner, we thought it would be a great time to talk about something we feel is very important; safeguarding in schools. In particular, how building design and facilities can aid with safeguarding children, which is something we take great care over when working on projects with schools. No one should be going to school with concerns over their safety. Schools should be a safe, risk-free environment to encourage learning and development. There is plenty that we, as architects and project managers, can do to help with these aims. Safeguarding is defined as protecting […]
As a business, our principles lead us to create safe environments for our clients and their visitors. One of the biggest and most devastating risks any building has is the risk of fire. As a highest priority, the safety of people inside the building is of utmost importance. Following that, ensuring the continued use of a space is vital to operations, no matter what industry you are in. Furthermore, protecting property and equipment from damage can be just as important. Finally, it almost goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway; it’s a legal requirement to ensure your building is […]
The public healthcare sector consists of many different kinds of buildings, all with specific requirements and rules for what you can and can’t do when it comes to architecture. These best practices come in the form of technical standards known as the Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) and Health Building Notes (HBN). Currently, there are around 100 in-date documents that make up these standards, ranging in creation date from 1993 to the current day. Staying on top of all of these best practices can be tough as the current guidance is just the latest in nearly 35 years and 500 documents-worth […]
The benefits of improving your educational facilities are numerous. Whether this is for schools, colleges, universities or any other FE organisations, these benefits cannot be understated. There have been many studies over the years, across several different countries, including studies published by the UK government, supporting what we already know anecdotally. No matter where these studies are carried out, the results are always very similar: the better the facilities, the better it is for the school. What do we mean by this? How is it better? Below are some examples of these aforementioned benefits, followed by information on what you […]
There are over 16,000 churches in the UK, some of which were originally built many centuries ago. In fact, the oldest church still in use in the UK was built prior to 597AD. This means a few things for ecclesiastical buildings. For starters, they are for the community. Religious and cultural hubs, which many people rely on every day. Secondly, they are seen as national monuments and are therefore protected as some of the most important historic buildings across England and Wales. Nearly 6,000 of our 16,000 churches are listed as Grade I or Grade II. Finally, due to their […]
Urgent Capital Support, otherwise known as UCS, is funding provided by the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA), usually through a loan. This is for academy trusts and sixth form colleges to gain funding to address urgent building condition issues, which could lead to the school (or a significant part of it) to be shut down. UCS is specifically designed for those who are unable to fund this work via their own reserves or other means. ‘Urgent’ in this context means that the support is needed sooner than the next CIF main round. Any applications will have to provide evidence […]
