Government Grants for Energy Efficiency
With autumn fast approaching, for many homeowners, the colder months are firmly on our minds. Whether it’s a boiler upgrade or new insulation that you’re in need of, like many, you’re probably facing financial limitations given the current cost of living crisis. With this in mind, our team have put together this blog to let you know your many options when it comes to government grants for energy efficiency.
What is a Government Grant?
A grant is a type of financial funding that is not liable to be paid back. There are a plethora of government funded schemes on offer for both business and individuals alike, focussing on a range of pain points (with energy efficiency being one of them!).
Government Grants for Energy Efficiency
The governments ‘Help to Heat’ scheme has been running for quite some time now, offering plenty of support for those looking to improve their energy efficiency.
Within the Help to Heat scheme, there are a number of campaigns including:
- The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
- Home Upgrade Grant – Phase 2
- Sustainable Warmth Competition – Applications closed for now
- Social Hosing Decarbonisation Fund – Applications closed for now
- Energy Company Obligation (ECO)
You can check if you are eligible for government grants for energy efficiency by visiting their website.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
In a bid to help us meet our net zero targets, this government grants for energy efficiency scheme offers part of the cost for new heating systems. This funding is only available to those who currently have a fossil-fuel system and are looking to replace this with a biomass boiler or heat pump. These options are much more eco-friendly in comparison to older alternatives.
Fossil fuel heating systems are considered to be those run by:
- Gas
- Oil
- Electric

Home Upgrade Grant – Phase 2
Also referred to as ‘HUG’, the Home Upgrade Grant looks to provide a range of energy efficiency upgrades to homes across England. Funding has now been granted to a number of local authorities and applications must be made to your own localised council. You can find out if your council received this funding by clicking here.
Eligible homes must be:
- On a low income
- Off of the main gas grid
- Have an EPC rating of ‘D’ or lower
- Be situated in one of the local authorities who were granted HUG funding
Energy Company Obligation (ECO)
Lastly, the government is also partnering with UK energy providers to help individuals claiming benefits or living in social housing to make energy-saving improvements to their property. This funding means that eligible applicants may receive financial support when upgrading their insulation or replacing/repairing their boiler. You can check your own eligibility here, however, your local council must also be taking part in the scheme in order to be awarded financial backing.
