Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship

It’s no longer the case that a degree guarantees an easy pathway into the world of work. For many employers, experience comes above all else. What’s more, apprenticeships are seen to be the solution to this. Now, however, there is the concern that apprentices aren’t getting the same level of educational training that’s provided by universities. But what if there was something that combined the best of both apprenticeships and a university degree for aspiring surveyors? That’s where a chartered surveyor degree apprenticeship comes in.

How does a Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship work?

Established back in 2015, degree apprenticeships have quickly become one of the more popular educational routes for students. It’s no wonder, either. They offer a valuable combination of both an industry-tailored university degree, and paid, on-the-job training. A chartered surveyor degree apprenticeship is perfect for those looking for a more ‘hands-on’ pathway into the industry.

Are Degree Apprenticeships for Everyone?

Just like traditional university degrees aren’t for everyone, the same can be said for a degree apprenticeship. Predominately practical professions which require minimal academic training, for example, tend to benefit more from offering standard apprenticeships. For other industries where academic education is of the upmost importance, however, a more conventional degree may be more beneficial.

Those industries in between, such as building surveying, degree apprenticeships act as the perfect middle ground. For a start, you need a keen understanding of maths, construction, and architectural principles which are best obtained through academia. Alongside this, however, you also need a large degree of practical knowledge, and where better to learn than on-the-job!

Difference between Degree and Non-degree surveying apprenticeships

Degree apprenticeships offer the best of both university degrees and apprenticeships, combining full-time paid work with part-time study. A chartered surveyor degree apprenticeship typically takes between 3 and 6 years to complete. The exact time, however, will differ depending on your previous experience, qualifications, and desired area of surveying. Once completed, you receive a fully accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree, as well as years of tailored industry experience.

Non-degree apprenticeships, on the other hand, are much shorter courses, taking approximately 2 years to complete. Similar to degree apprenticeships, your time is split between your employer and studying, this time towards an entry level qualification. These include relevant technical and functional skills certifications, as well as a knowledge-based industry qualification.

Benefits of Degree Apprenticeships

Aside from receiving a fully accredited bachelor’s degree itself, degree apprenticeships also offer several other benefits, including:

  • Fully covered training and tuition fees, leaving you with only your living expenses to pay for.
  • You’re provided a fair salary alongside your studies.
  • By the time you earn your degree, you’ll have several years of tailored work experience under your belt.
  • Optimal opportunity to network with surveying professionals across the industry.
