WC Refurbishment – Mossbourne
Federation

This transformational site‑wide scheme has brought pupil washroom facilities into the 21st century, forming a key part of the Academy Trust’s ambition to modernise the wider learning environment. The washrooms were designed as open, accessible and bright hubs positioned strategically across the site to enhance daily pupil experience.

The Challenge

Before refurbishment, the WC areas were dated, difficult to maintain and no longer met modern standards for hygiene, accessibility or safeguarding. The Trust sought an upgrade that would:

  • Replace ageing sanitaryware and cubicles
  • Improve ventilation and lighting
  • Address worn finishes and poor durability
  • Reduce ongoing maintenance demands
  • Create a brighter, safer and more welcoming environment for pupils

With the facilities in daily use, careful planning was essential to minimise disruption to the school.

Concept & Design Development

The concept design phase included a site‑wide audit of existing facilities, assessing their condition, layout, accessibility and inclusivity. This work informed the creation of central washroom hubs designed to reflect the modern environments pupils encounter in their wider lives.

The detailed design then developed the structural, compliance and functional requirements of the scheme. All documentation was prepared and tendered in line with public‑sector procurement rules, ensuring transparency and value for money. Regular design and progress meetings kept the whole team aligned throughout.

Our Approach

Munday & Cramer managed the project from initial planning through to completion, including:

  • Condition review of the existing WC areas
  • Development of a detailed specification and scope of works
  • Management of procurement and contractor appointment
  • Contract administration and site inspections throughout the programme
  • Quality assurance and final handover to the school

Our team ensured that all works were delivered safely, compliantly and in line with the Trust’s expectations.

The Solution

The refurbishment delivered a complete transformation of the WC facilities, including:

  • Full strip‑out of existing fixtures and finishes
  • Installation of new sanitaryware and IPS panelling
  • Durable, easy‑clean cubicles
  • Upgraded lighting and mechanical extract ventilation
  • New hygienic wall and floor finishes
  • Plumbing upgrades to improve reliability and water efficiency
  • Redecoration and modernisation inspired by the school’s colour theme

The design focused on robustness, hygiene and ease of maintenance, ensuring the facilities will serve the school for years to come.

The Outcome

The project was successfully completed and handed over to the school, who were delighted with the results. The refurbished WC areas now provide:

  • A modern, bright and hygienic environment
  • Improved ventilation and lighting
  • Durable, low‑maintenance finishes
  • Enhanced safeguarding and accessibility
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
  • A significantly improved experience for pupils

Delivered to a high standard, the scheme has been positively received by both the school and the wider community.
