From Sketch to Site: Architectural Design Explained
The architectural design phase of any build is arguably one of the most important. It allows you to build concrete foundations for the entire process ahead. This being said, architects do far more than just throw together a few mock-ups. In actual fact, there is more to it than meets the eye.

Pre-Design
Prior to beginning architectural design, the architect must first gather an understanding of the project requirements. Aesthetics aren’t everything. Whilst they do play an important role, consideration must also be given to the intended functionality of the property. It is during this phase that architects will also consider any limitations, the project budget, and timescales.
During the pre-design phase, it’s likely that architects will visit the site to carry out preliminary checks. Upon analysis, they may also want to research regulations or apply for the correct permissions to carry out their work.
Schematic Design
It is during this phase that the designing can really begin. As part of this step, your architects will draw up rough sketches of the build and basic floor plans. They will also explore different design options, presenting these to the client to gauge their preference.
This phase uses the information gathered in phase 1 to put together a design that is both aesthetic and functional. A good architect will work with you to ensure as many of your boxes are ticked as possible.
Design Development
Once feedback has been given, your architect can now work on refining the design concept. It’s during this phase that architectural design becomes more detailed. From establishing the different elevations throughout the build, right down to deciding on materials and finishes for each different aspect, this is where everything starts coming to life.
Your architects will also work with structural consultants during this phase to ensure their plans are feasible, so as not to waste time further down the line.
Documentation
Next up, the architectural design plans and technical aspects will be finalised, including structural, plumbing, and electrical details. Your architects will then apply for and obtain the necessary permits for the work and piece together a team of contractors.
Execution
Lastly, we move onto the execution. Your architects are now responsible for overseeing the construction process alongside your project manager. This is vital, as it is their role to ensure the design is implemented as intended and plans are interpreted correctly. They will also conduct regular site visits to monitor project progress and address any issues that arise.
