Elm Hall Primary School – Section 106 – New Nursery

Munday & Cramer has delivered this purpose-built nursery facility designed specifically for children aged 3-4 years, with flexibility for future expansion as the school’s needs develop. This exciting project addresses growing demand for early years provision whilst creating a clean, quality learning environment that supports child development through this thoughtful design.

The Brief

The school required additional nursery accommodation to meet increasing demand for early years places within the local community. The brief required a flexible, accessible facility that would provide an inspiring learning environment for young children whilst integrating seamlessly with existing school operations.

Key requirements included:

  • Spacious classroom designed for early years learning and play
  • Full accessibility throughout the facility
  • Dedicated kitchen space supporting daily activities & healthy meal provision
  • Level access ensuring safe movement for all users
  • Maximum natural daylight to create bright, welcoming spaces
  • Outdoor learning areas encouraging exploration & connection with nature

Planning Challenges & Solutions

This project was one of the first for the council to navigate new Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) legislation requirements. Working closely with the council’s infrastructure team, we successfully addressed these regulatory requirements whilst maintaining project viability.

The planning process required careful planning, particularly addressing concerns from neighbouring nursery facilities.

Working with contractors AW Hardy, the project has now completed successfully. The team delivered a professional service whilst maintaining safety standards appropriate for a school environment throughout the construction period.

Funding & Value Management

This project is funded through Section 106 developer contributions, demonstrating effective partnership working between the school, local authority and the community. Working alongside the council’s team, we have managed the budget efficiently to maximise value whilst delivering all essential project requirements.

Project Outcomes

The nursery facility was completed on time in September 2025. The purpose-built design has provided the flexible early years learning environment envisioned in the original brief.

Educational Benefits:

  • Purpose-designed spaces now supporting daily early years curriculum delivery
  • Outdoor learning areas being actively used for physical development & environmental education
  • Seamless integration with existing school operations creating the planned educational pathway

The completed facility has delivered all key design objectives including maximum natural daylight, level access throughout, & secure outdoor play areas.
