Trinity St Mary’s Church of England Primary School in South Woodham Ferrers, Essex is a popular local school within the centre of the town. Teaching just under two hundred pupils aged between 4 and 11, the school is faith-led. Most recently, the school has been rated as Good by Ofsted and Outstanding by the Church of England.
An existing demountable classroom used by the school was beyond its useful life and economical repair. A replacement was required, but careful consideration was needed in terms of design and the usage of the site. The location of the school within the middle of South Woodham Ferrers, as well as the presence of a number of protected trees meant that space was at a premium for the new classbase.
A solution was developed to fit comfortably within the existing space, providing a new reception class amongst a dedicated play area. The design was sympathetic to the existing buildings of the school, featuring stack-bond brickwork and traditional pointing. A creasing tile detail to the eaves was also incorporated to maintain the traditional look.
The new class-base is completely self-contained, and includes WC facilities for pupils, as well as a dedicated cooking/wet area. Smart lighting systems featuring LED fittings were also incorporated within the design to minimise operational costs of the building.
“We are absolutely delighted with our new Reception class. It gives the children such a fantastic learning environment and is a lovely place to be. We can’t thank Munday + Cramer enough for their work and professional approach to the project.”
