Building Surveying Work Experience: Oliver’s Second Week With the Team

After joining us last year for his first week of work experience, we were pleased to welcome Oliver Nicholls back to Munday & Cramer for a second placement. His enthusiasm for the industry was clear from the moment he arrived, and this visit gave him the chance to build on what he learned previously and experience more of the day‑to‑day reality of building surveying.

One of the key moments of Oliver’s week was spending a full day on site with Director Lee Hatwell, attending a live inspection at a school that had been struggling with persistent roof leaks. Oliver was able to observe the inspection from start to finish — from accessing the roof and reviewing the affected areas, through to discussing the likely causes of water ingress and the remedial options available. Back in the office, he took responsibility for writing up the inspection report, summarising the findings and presenting them clearly. It was a valuable exercise that allowed him to understand how observations on site translate into formal documentation and client advice.

Throughout the rest of the week, Oliver spent time shadowing members of our assets and estates team. He joined surveyors at progress meetings with clients, observed routine site inspections across several school buildings, and gained insight into how projects move from initial survey through to planning and delivery. He also spent time in the office completing administrative tasks and familiarising himself with the software and systems we use daily. This blend of site exposure and office‑based work gave him a rounded understanding of the profession and the responsibilities that come with it.

What stood out most was Oliver’s willingness to get involved, ask questions and take initiative. He approached each task with genuine interest and a clear desire to learn, reinforcing the impression he made during his first visit. His second week with us confirmed that he has the right attitude and potential to thrive in the industry.

We’re delighted that Oliver will now be joining Munday & Cramer as an Apprentice Building Surveyor, working closely with our assets and estates team as he begins his formal training. It’s always rewarding to support young people entering the profession, and we look forward to helping Oliver develop his skills and grow into his new role.
