Two Storey Extension – Corbets Tey School

Munday & Cramer designed and delivered this significant expansion to Corbets Tey school’s central accommodation. The school required additional teaching and support spaces to meet growing demand, alongside a long‑term solution to improve accessibility across the site. The existing demountable building, located within the central courtyard, had reached the end of its useful life and no longer met the operational needs of the school.

Our team developed a scheme for a new two‑storey extension positioned within the courtyard and connected to the existing school on three sides. This location allowed the new accommodation to integrate with the current layout while allowing internal circulation. The design incorporated new:

  • Teaching rooms
  • Office space
  • A staffroom
  • Modern WC facilities

A key aspect of the project for the school was accessibility. Prior to the works, movement between the front and rear halves of the school required staff and pupils to pass through the hall and navigate external steps. The new extension incorporates a fully accessible internal ramped route, providing a safe connection through the building and removing the need for staff and pupils to use external routes. This has transformed the way the school moves, improving safety, efficiency and inclusivity.

The existing demountable building was demolished and removed from site, allowing construction to proceed within the tight courtyard space. Close coordination with the school ensured that works were planned around term‑time operations, with key activities scheduled to minimise disruption.

The school now benefits from high‑quality teaching accommodation, improved staff facilities and a modern WC provision, all delivered within a building that feels fully integrated with the existing estate. Most importantly, the new internal access route has resolved long‑standing circulation challenges, creating a safer and more inclusive environment for the staff and pupils.
