Ravenstone Primary School – Early Years CIF Block Replacement

Munday & Cramer was commissioned to replace the dilapidated early years teaching block at Ravenstone Primary School, funded through Condition Improvement Fund 24/25. The project addressed urgent safety concerns and restored vital early years provision for the local community.
The Challenge
The existing modular classroom, installed in the early 1980s, had become unsafe and unusable due to:
-
Extensive dry rot caused by water penetration through a failed roof
-
Structural non-compliance with local authority requirements
-
Presence of asbestos within the building fabric
-
Risk of imminent collapse, posing serious health and safety risks
The building’s poor condition led to closure of the early years facility, impacting the school’s ability to provide essential early education and support for families. Independent surveys confirmed that repair was not economically viable.
The Solution
Munday & Cramer conducted a thorough feasibility study and options appraisal, selecting the preferred solution to construct a purpose-built, single-storey early years building on the existing site. This approach ensured minimal disruption and maintained secure access for pupils and staff.
The newly constructed early years building was designed to provide a modern, safe, and inclusive environment for early years children.
Project delivery was carefully thought out ensuring minimal disruption to the school’s learning environment. The works included the demolition of the existing structure, management of asbestos removal, and compliance to all current regulations.
The project was delivered by Sure Building & Construction Ltd, with Munday & Cramer providing full project management and contract administration.
The outcome
The new nursery at Ravenstone Primary School is now providing a safe and comfortable environment for children and staff. With a robust 50-year design life, the facility is built to last. The project has significantly improved standards of safety and comfort, while also delivering impressive gains in energy performance thanks to modern construction and sustainable technologies. The response from staff, parents, and the wider community has been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting the building’s success in restoring vital early years provision and supporting local families.
