Less paperwork, more chargepoints: government cuts red tape to make it easier, quicker and cheaper to switch to EVs

UK Government Makes it Easier & Cheaper For Drivers to Switch to EV’s

According to the latest government announcement, drivers no longer require planning applications to install EV chargers, saving £1,100 per year. This change applies to both public and private EV charge points, removing a significant barrier that previously slowed down installations.

This approach makes it much easier for EV owners and businesses to install charge points on driveways or at workplaces. By eliminating the planning application requirement, the government has removed both the time delays and costs associated with the approval process.

Government Financial Support: Up to £350 Available

The government continues to support EV adoption through the Electric Vehicle Charge Point Grant published in April 2023. The Electric Vehicle Home charge Scheme provides up to £350 towards the cost of installing a charge point at domestic properties, covering either £350 or 75% of the total cost, whichever is lower.

This support is particularly valuable for:

  • Renters who need permission from their landlord
  • Flat owners who require building consent
  • Properties with off-street parking requirements
  • Landlords installing multiple charge points (up to 200 grants annually for residential properties)

Landlords can receive up to 200 grants annually for residential properties and 100 for commercial properties, making it economically viable to retrofit older buildings with EV charging infrastructure.

What are the benefits?

The combination of streamlined planning processes and financial incentives creates significant advantages:

For homeowners: Faster installation times, reduced bureaucracy, and financial support that can cover a substantial portion of installation costs.

For businesses: Easier workplace charging installation, helping attract and retain staff while demonstrating environmental commitment.

For landlords: Multiple grant opportunities and simplified processes for installing charging infrastructure across property portfolios.
