House Extension Architects: What comes first – the builder or the architect?

So, you’re looking to build a new space in your home. You’ve created an image in your head of what you want this to look like and have made a Pinterest board. But where do you start? If this is as far as you’ve got with the process, it’s time to talk to a team of credible house extension architects.

At Munday + Cramer, we have over 40 years of experience in residential architecture. During this time, we have been responsible for designing some spectacular spaces and reshaping entire homes. In addition to this, we also specialise in surveying, procurement, and project management.

What is architecture?

If this is your first time building a new structure, you may be wondering what it is that house extension architects actually do. For those who aren’t experienced in construction, the work of architects and builders often get confused with one another. Nevertheless, the two specialisms couldn’t be more different.

In layman’s terms, architecture is all about the design phase. Our expert team are responsible for bringing the ideas of our clients to life, using 3D modelling and comprehensive plans.

What comes first?

Now that you have a better understanding of architecture, you might be able to answer this question yourselves. It’s the house extension architects, of course!

We’re often approached by individuals with big dreams. Some of these aren’t, however, realistic. It’s our job to take a look at the project and tell you if this is actually viable. From here, we’ll then work with you to design a plan and advise on any planning permission you may need for the work. Once this is granted, we’ll then pair you with the right contractors for the job and construction can begin!

When you work with a multi-skilled team of house extension architects like Munday + Cramer, we can manage the project from start to finish. In the meantime, you can sit back and enjoy the process!

Do I really need an architect for my project?

As we mentioned before, one of the main benefits of an architect is the advice you will receive on gaining the right permissions. Knowing what to apply for and finding the right information online can be a lengthy process. By working with experienced architects, however, you are able to rest easy knowing you’re not breaking any important laws.

In addition, the builders you instruct to undertake the project will need a detailed plan of what you’re proposing. Without this, they are unable to work. Getting the right information down on paper can be tricky. There are also all the difficult calculations and lots of different logistical issues to consider too. Bringing in an architect will remove an element of stress from off your shoulders.
