What Are T Levels?: Everything you need to know
As they are still relatively new, many people are still asking, “What are T levels?”
It is understandable that this still isn’t completely understood as they launched towards the end of 2020 and there have been some obstacles in getting them off the ground – primarily due to COVID-19. In this blog post we intend to cover what T levels are and what we can do to help in the process of delivering them.
Before diving straight in, allow us to first introduce ourselves and provide some credentials. What are T Level’s?
T Levels are a new type of educational course, usually taken between the ages of 16-18 in place of regular A levels. These are equivalent to 3 A Levels but take a more practical approach to learning. They are 2-year courses and allow learners to gain skills within the specific industries they would like to enter. They combine learning within a school or college setting with a minimum of 315 hours of work in a professional placement.
When googling ‘what are T Levels’ and looking at some other information on the topic, it could be easy to confuse this type of course with an apprenticeship. Nevertheless, the two are very different, with T Levels offering more in-classroom learning. Meanwhile, the latter option is composed of 80% on-the-job learning and 20% off-the-job. Apprenticeships are better suited to those who are ready for the world of work and wish to earn a wage whilst they study.
When were T Levels introduced?
Introduced in September 2020, the scheme initially rolled out 3 T Level courses. Since then, a further 13 have been added to the curriculum and 7 more are set to be launched in September 2023. These courses are available at selected colleges in England, with the wider view of growing this scheme in years to come. Current available courses include the likes of Education and Childcare, Health and Science, Engineering and Manufacturing, and Business and Administration.

Funding for T Levels
As of 22nd November, the applications for TLCF (T Levels Capital Fund) opened. This funding scheme was created to aid education facilities in providing these kinds of courses. The deadline for new bids is on the 3rd February 2023, giving only a handful of weeks to finalise your applications. Decisions will then be made, and colleges will be notified of the outcome in summer 2023.
