As part of St. Peter & St. Paul’s Asset Management Plan; a window replacement scheme was identified high priority. Munday + Cramer’s ongoing support of the single-form entry primary in Orpington had highlighted the need to replace a range of windows throughout the school.
As part of the ongoing refurbishment of the external envelope of the school, windows were a major area of concern for the school. Original Crittall windows were found throughout the school; the single glazed units presenting significant Health and Safety and energy-loss challenges. A number of timber frames were also in-situ throughout the school, with poor conditions easily visible.
Against the EFA’s criteria, the replacement of windows forms a key focus for recent rounds of the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF). Therefore the school progressed the development of a cohesive bid to attract funding. Munday + Cramer provided technical support; undertaking a range of surveys and assessments, as well as collating historical evidence to support the bid. The scheme was designed and tendered, allowing detailed costings and a programme to be provided alongside the bid application.
Powdered Aluminium windows were specified throughout the school; offering better value for money over a whole life cost assessment. The Aluminium solution also being more robust in the school environment. The opportunity was also taken to create a feature stained window within the main lobby. The design for the stained glass was selected from a competition run for the pupils of the school.
With a successful bid, Avenue Architectural Glazing were appointed to deliver the window replacement scheme over the summer holidays. The project was successfully completed during the break, and alongside a roof replacement have vastly improved the thermal performance and integrity of the school buildings.
